The Georgia Bulldogs defeated the Alabama Crimson Tide 20-17 on Saturday night, securing a victory that positions the Bulldogs to become the No. 1 team in the nation in the latest Associated Press Top 25 Poll. The result marks Georgia's first regular-season win in Tuscaloosa since 2007.
While Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer noted that Dijon Lee Jr.'s personal-foul penalty was a major talking point, the decisive moment was a non-call late in the fourth quarter. Crimson Tide quarterback Keelon Russell targeted wide receiver Rico Scott near the end zone, but Bulldogs safety KJ Bolden appeared to tackle Scott as the ball arrived. DeBoer sought a pass interference penalty that would have moved Alabama into field-goal range, yet the SEC officiating crew declined to throw the flag.
On the following play, Bolden sacked Russell, ending Alabama's drive. The Crimson Tide subsequently punted, and Lee committed a foul against a Georgia player. This sequence of events led directly to Alabama's first loss of the season. "We can’t put the game in that situation where the officials come into play," DeBoer said.
Despite taking repeated hits, Bulldogs quarterback Gunner Stockton completed 18 of 22 passes for 248 yards, adding a touchdown pass and an interception. His performance helped Georgia control the final minutes of the game. Georgia head coach Kirby Smart stated, "I didn’t come here to lose." The Bulldogs' ascent to the top of the rankings is aided by Texas losing to Oklahoma earlier on Saturday.
