Grindr has agreed to acquire PurposeMed Inc., the Canadian company behind Freddie, a leading telehealth provider of HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). The acquisition includes Freddie's partnerships with affiliated clinical networks and marks the first major step in the company's strategy to build a broader digital platform for gay men.
Grindr describes the move as a catalyst for a healthcare business it believes can rival or exceed the size and profitability of its core social networking operations. The company stated that combining Freddie's medical capabilities with Grindr's user base will allow it to bring testing, care, and medication delivery directly into the app. Grindr noted that approximately 400,000 of its US users currently indicate on their profiles that they take PrEP. The company estimates that more than 2 million additional US users should be on PrEP, citing both personal health and the health of potential partners as reasons for uptake.
Freddie serves more than 55,000 patients and is expected to generate over $80 million in revenue in 2026. The company projects healthcare margins at maturity will exceed 40%, aligning with core Grindr margins, with an expected adjusted EBITDA margin in the mid-teens. These figures are intended to illustrate the business opportunity and do not represent company guidance. Grindr plans to integrate PrEP services with its premium subscription tiers, allowing patients to pair medical care with app benefits. This integration is designed to create a flywheel where improved app engagement drives more users into healthcare, which in turn funds further investment in the platform.
The acquisition accelerates the third phase of Grindr's long-term growth strategy, outlined at its 2024 Investor Day. In that presentation, management described expansion opportunities in healthcare, wellness, travel, and local discovery. The first two phases focused on product improvements and premiumization. Since 2022, Grindr has increased payer penetration from below 6% to above 9%, nearly doubling its paying user base. In mid-2025, the company shifted focus to premiumization, implementing price changes that resulted in subscribers paying approximately 20% more with minimal churn. A new AI-native subscription tier called Edge is scheduled to launch next, with management expecting it to drive strong revenue growth in 2027.
Grindr previously launched Woodwork, a partnership-based model for early self-pay healthcare offerings. Management stated that Woodwork demonstrated user trust in Grindr for healthcare services and confirmed that native in-app experiences drive engagement. The Freddie acquisition will serve as the foundation for Grindr Health, expanding beyond PrEP to include HIV and other sexually transmitted infection prevention and treatment, performance medications, peptides, and eventually longevity and general clinical care. The company emphasized that its financial plan for expansion includes the costs of exploring these areas but does not include their potential revenue.
