Nevada became the first state to pass a law legalizing self-driving cars on public roads in June 2011. The Verge reports this legislative move occurred well before such vehicles were actually operating on public streets. The timeline is stark. It places the Nevada law three years before the introduction of Tesla's Autopilot. It also predates the spinout of Waymo from the Google self-driving car project by five years. Additionally, the law was enacted seven years before the launch of the first commercial robotaxi. The Verge's weekly newsletter, The Stepback, outlines this history to provide context for current autonomous vehicle policy discussions. Andrew J. Hawkins covers autonomous vehicles, policy, and road rules for The Verge. The newsletter is delivered to subscribers at 8AM ET.
