New York Giants to release Odell Beckham Jr after three games

The New York Giants are set to release wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr, ending his second stint with the franchise after just three regular season games. The NFL confirmed the expected move on social media, capping a brief reunion that began when the 33 year old signed with the team in June.

Beckham, a three time Pro Bowler, originally joined the Giants when they selected him 12th overall in the 2014 NFL Draft. During his first five seasons in New York, he served as a key figure alongside quarterback Eli Manning, recording more than 1,000 receiving yards in four of those years. His departure marks the end of a cycle that saw him play for the Cleveland Browns, Los Angeles Rams, Baltimore Ravens, and Miami Dolphins between 2019 and 2024.

His return to New York was characterized by limited production. In his first regular season game back against the Tennessee Titans, Beckham recorded his first target of the season but finished without a reception. The Giants won that contest 12 to 7 in a rain plagued matchup at MetLife Stadium. This victory came shortly before his release was announced.

The move leaves the Giants' offense in a challenging position during the early stages of the season. The team recently lost starting quarterback Jaxson Dart for the remainder of the year following a knee injury sustained during a loss to the Los Angeles Rams. Veteran quarterback Jameis Winston has stepped in to lead the offense, guiding the team to their recent win over Tennessee. To bolster their depth, New York acquired Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy on Monday in exchange for a fifth round pick in the 2027 NFL Draft.
