Ripple launches equity swap desk with XRP on the margin, not in the trade

Key takeaways
- Ripple Prime opened a Delta One desk on August 27 offering total return swaps on U.S.-listed stocks, indices, and digital assets without direct ownership.
- XRP, trading around $1.40 at launch, functions only as eligible collateral, not as an asset Ripple buys or warehouses.
- The desk launched with over $1 billion in regulatory net capital and offers cross-margining across currency, bond, crypto, and equity swap positions.
- Ripple Prime says it holds no proprietary positions and runs no proprietary trading book, distinguishing itself from Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley.
- RLUSD, Ripple's stablecoin, crossed $2 billion in market cap in late August and is the asset named across Ripple Prime's collateral documents.
The swap market's appetite for synthetic equity exposure has found a new counterparty. Ripple Prime opened a Delta One desk on August 27, giving hedge funds, asset managers, market makers, and ETF issuers total return swap access to U.S.-listed stocks, market indices, and digital assets, without taking direct ownership. $XRP, trading around $1.40 when the desk went live, enters the picture as eligible collateral, not as something Ripple goes out to buy.
What the desk does
Delta One products move dollar for dollar with whatever they track. A fund wanting S&P 500 exposure enters a total return swap with Ripple Prime, collects the index return, and pays a financing charge. No shares change hands. Ripple Prime President Noel Kimmel put the client base at hedge funds, asset managers, market makers, and ETF issuers. The firm arrived at launch with over $1 billion in regulatory net capital, which matters because a swap is only as good as the credit standing behind it. Cross-margining lets clients net currency, bond, and crypto positions against the equity swaps inside one margin account.
Ripple Prime also takes a pointed shot at the incumbents. Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley run swap desks alongside proprietary trading books. Ripple Prime says it does neither, keeping to clearing and financing only.
The read-through for XRP
The token's role is in the collateral stack, not the trade itself. CME's XRP futures market already exists for hedging purposes: those contracts traded 1.32 million lots worth $62.87 billion in notional value in their first year through May 15, averaging $238 million per day, with options live since October 2025. A desk covering XRP swap exposure has a regulated, liquid route that bypasses spot sourcing and custody entirely.
Ripple also told clients it carries no proprietary positions. Warehousing spot XRP against a swap book would look very much like the thing the firm said it does not do.
The written record reinforces this. RLUSD, Ripple's dollar stablecoin, crossed $2 billion in market cap in late August and now accounts for more than 90% of stablecoin supply on the XRP Ledger, with over $1 billion issued there. It is the asset named across Ripple Prime's collateral documents. The Delta One launch announcement mentions XRP exactly once, in the About Ripple section at the bottom.
CEO Mike Higgins confirmed in March that institutions can pledge XRP as collateral and borrow against it. He said in May that XRP working alongside Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana in institutional margin accounts is the next step for the market. The equity desk is the first live test of that claim.
Against the backdrop of the launch, the alternative for spot XRP exposure is already operating. Spot XRP ETFs drew $110.49 million in the week ending August 28, their strongest week of 2026, and now hold $1.44 billion in tokens. The CLARITY Act, which the Senate takes up again after returning on September 14, determines whether bank clients can put XRP in institutional portfolios at all.
