US equity futures traded mostly flat in the pre-bell session on Monday as lower-than-expected jobs data released on Friday reduced market expectations for a Federal Reserve interest rate hike this month. Dow Jones Industrial Average futures and S&P 500 futures held steady, while Nasdaq futures slipped 0.2%.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported on Friday that total nonfarm payrolls increased by 29,000 last month. This figure fell well short of the 90,000 increase projected in a survey compiled by Bloomberg. In response, the CME FedWatch tool indicates that markets are now pricing in an 80.6% probability that the Federal Open Market Committee will leave its benchmark lending rate unchanged at the end of this month, a rise from 76% on Thursday.
Traders are watching for additional insights into the central bank's thinking with the Wednesday release of minutes from the Federal Reserve's mid-September policy session. Economic data continues to flow this week, with the S&P Global purchasing managers' index composite final report for September scheduled for 9:45 am ET, followed by ISM's services data at 10:00 am ET.
Oil prices showed mixed movement, with front-month North Sea Brent crude rising 0.3% to $102.52 per barrel. In contrast, US West Texas Intermediate crude fell 0.9% to $90.26 per barrel.
Global markets displayed varied performance. Japan's Nikkei closed 2.4% higher, and Hong Kong's Hang Seng ended 0.3% higher. China's Shanghai Composite remained closed for a public holiday. In Europe, the UK's FTSE 100 was up 0.5%, and Germany's DAX index gained 0.3% during the early afternoon session.
Corporate earnings and corporate actions drove specific stock movements. PepsiCo (PEP) and Delta Air Lines (DAL) are expected to report their financial results this week. Qualcomm (QCOM) shares rose 1% after Huawei announced that the two companies entered into a multi-year patent licensing agreement.
Cerebras Systems (CBRS) stock climbed more than 5% after OpenAI Chief Executive Sam Altman described the AI hardware firm as a "close partner." PTC (PTC) shares surged more than 35% following an announcement by Schneider Electric that it will acquire the company in an all-cash deal valued at $23.7 billion.
On the downside, Flux (FLUX) shares dropped more than 19%. This move followed Solidion Technology (STI) declaring its acquisition bid as best and final after Flux rejected the previously announced proposal.
