The U.S. Department of Justice has moved to seize approximately $61 million in cryptocurrency funds tied to sanctioned Iranian oil sales. The federal complaint alleges that two China-based companies laundered the proceeds through trading accounts on Binance, a major global crypto exchange. While Binance is not currently named as a defendant in the case, the filing marks a renewed legal challenge for the platform and its native token, BNB.
BNB remains the fourth-largest cryptocurrency by market value, having increased by 240% over the past three years. This performance has outpaced major competitors such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, and XRP. The token serves as the native coin for BNB Chain, a blockchain that evolved from the Binance exchange. As of July, Binance reported 323 million registered users and recorded $11.4 trillion in trading volume during the first half of 2026.
The current legal action follows earlier scrutiny from U.S. lawmakers. In February of this year, a Senate subcommittee requested records regarding the same two businesses implicated in the recent DOJ filing. The subcommittee stated that Binance appeared to have ignored warnings and recommendations to prevent Iranian money laundering schemes on its platform. This congressional attention adds to a history of regulatory friction for the exchange.
In 2023, Binance pleaded guilty to violations of anti-money laundering laws and sanctions regulations. The company agreed to pay $4.3 billion in penalties as part of that resolution. The recurrence of legal issues involving BNB Chain has raised concerns among institutional investors and banks considering allocation to crypto assets. For many in the traditional finance sector, the exchange's reputation may render BNB an unviable investment option.
The relationship between BNB's value and the financial health of the Binance exchange is complex. BNB Chain operates an Auto-Burn mechanism that permanently destroys coins based on price and block production, a process the chain says runs independently of the exchange. Consequently, BNB could retain some value even if Binance incurs further penalties, as the chain continues to collect network fees.
However, demand for BNB is heavily driven by the centrality of the Binance exchange within the crypto sector. Widespread seizures or negative sentiment could impact user confidence. The Motley Fool recommends BNB but suggests selling the token for most investors due to these ongoing legal risks and the lack of immediate reward for taking on that exposure.
