Florida GOP nominee Mike Beltran targets Kathy Castor's voting record

Republican nominee Mike Beltran is challenging Democratic incumbent Kathy Castor in Florida's 14th congressional district by attacking her twenty-year tenure as a lack of substantive legislative achievement. In an interview with Fox News Digital, Beltran, a former Florida state representative and practicing attorney, characterized Castor as a "socialist" rubber-stamp who has offered Tampa Bay residents "precious little to show" during her time in office. Beltran contends that Castor's primary accomplishment has been renaming post offices and that she votes with her party over 90 percent of the time, including with candidates he labels as radical socialists.

Beltran argues that reelecting Castor would result in continued alignment with House leadership figures such as Hakeem Jeffries and committee chairs including Raskin, Omar, and Cortez. He asserts that these individuals would push policies that diverge from the needs of Tampa families. In contrast, Beltran cites his record in the Florida Legislature from 2019 to 2024, where he claims to have acted as an independent conservative voice. He states he voted against special interests, including insurance companies and home builders, whenever he believed it was best for the community, regardless of party pressure.

The campaign centers on fiscal accountability and foreign aid. Beltran argues that the United States should not subsidize wealthy allies like Germany and Spain with taxpayer funds while borrowing $2 trillion annually from countries such as China. He points to Germany spending under 2 percent of GDP on military budgets compared to the U.S. spending over 5 percent, or about a trillion dollars. Beltran notes that Israel and South Korea spend over 10 percent of their GDP on defense and should carry more of their own security burden. He links this foreign spending to domestic inflation and calls for a reexamination of military relationships to ensure exchanges are not one-sided.

Beltran also leverages his background as a litigator, claiming his legal skills will allow him to scrutinize witnesses and write statutes effectively in Congress. He contrasts his active practice of nearly 20 years in Tampa Bay with Castor, whom he describes as a former land use attorney who has not practiced recently. Beltran asserts he has never seen Castor cross-examine a witness effectively or apply her legal skills to significant legislative initiatives.

On specific policy votes, Beltran accuses Castor of opposing tax cuts for the middle class, working class, and retirees. He highlights her opposition to removing taxes on tips, Social Security, and overtime. He also cites her recent vote in favor of using taxpayer funds for trans surgeries for children as evidence of misaligned priorities. Beltran argues that single mothers in Hillsborough County should not pay for such procedures while being taxed on their own labor income.

Beltran pledges to work across party lines to identify waste, fraud, and abuse in the federal budget. He warns that failing to balance the budget and pay down the debt could lead to a loss of credit and lending capacity. The campaign frames the November election as a choice between embracing radical policies or pursuing economic growth and prosperity. Beltran criticizes Castor for welcoming democratic socialist candidates like Angie Nixon into her party's "big tent" without condemning their ideology, arguing this empowers radicals within the Democratic Party.
