Coinbase (NASDAQ: COIN) has partnered with payments infrastructure provider Moov to offer stablecoin payment services to more than 1,000 community banks and credit unions in the United States. The collaboration, announced on Thursday, allows these financial institutions to accept, settle, and fund stablecoin transactions through Moov's existing platform without developing proprietary crypto infrastructure.

Moov will integrate Coinbase's stablecoin technology using the Coinbase Developer Platform's custodial wallet accounts and Payments API. This setup supports consumer stablecoin payments, merchant acceptance, merchant settlement, and payouts. For business and merchant transactions, Moov will also utilize Coinbase's custodial accounts to manage digital asset funds.

Ryan VanGrack, vice chair and head of corporate affairs at Coinbase, stated that the partnership aims to meet local institutions where they are, providing tools to compete with larger players while preserving their community trust. The move occurs as stablecoins assume a larger role in payments and financial services, potentially pressuring smaller institutions to offer digital asset services without incurring the costs and complexity of building the technology independently.

The partnership aligns with recent industry developments regarding stablecoin adoption. Earlier this month, a group of 21 leading global banks, including Goldman Sachs (BKK: GSUS06), Bank of America (NYSE: BAC), Citi (NYSE: C), and Deutsche Bank (ETR: DBK), outlined a plan to create a regulated, dollar-based stablecoin venture by the first half of 2027. Additionally, U.S. Bancorp (NYSE: USB) revealed yesterday that it is preparing to launch USBDC, a dollar-pegged stablecoin, following a completed live cross-border payment between the U.S. and Europe.

Jill Castilla, CEO of Citizens Bank of Edmond, noted that small businesses are increasingly seeking methods to reduce payment costs and receive funds faster. According to data from DefiLlama, the total stablecoin supply currently stands at approximately $305 billion.
