FB Financial shares dropped by more than 4% on Tuesday, underperforming the flat S&P 500 index following the release of third-quarter results. Investors sold the regional bank's stock after the company reported total revenue of just under $174.5 million, a figure that lagged behind the consensus analyst estimate of $181.6 million.

Despite the top-line disappointment, the bank posted growth in key balance sheet metrics. Total deposits rose by almost 9% year over year to reach $14.7 billion, while loans held for investment advanced by just under 10% to $13.2 billion. The modest revenue increase was driven by a slight rise from the $173.9 million reported in the same period last year.

On the bottom line, FB Financial's non-GAAP net income increased by nearly 6% to $60.9 million, or $1.21 per share. This per-share figure matched the consensus estimate from analysts, but the overall revenue performance fell short of market expectations.

The company attributed the revenue shortfall to a decline in mortgage banking profitability and continued investments in growth initiatives. While management noted success in growing loans and deposits, the additional spending on these initiatives weighed on immediate financial results.

Market reaction suggests that shareholders are prioritizing near-term fundamental improvements over balance sheet expansion. Until FB Financial demonstrates that its growth initiatives translate into meaningful gains in headline fundamentals, investor sentiment may remain cautious.
