Federal agents executed a judicially authorized search warrant at the Washington home of Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) on Monday, a Department of Justice spokesperson confirmed to Axios. The action marks a significant escalation in the Trump administration's legal and political confrontation with the Minnesota progressive, who has publicly condemned the immigration crackdown in her state.
Homeland Security Investigations agents conducted the pre-dawn search, according to Fox News, which cited a Justice Department statement. A DOJ spokesperson told Axios that the agents acted on a warrant secured by the Department of Justice as part of an ongoing federal criminal investigation. Fox News reported that the search was tied to a fraud investigation concerning Omar's immigration paperwork. Neither the Department of Homeland Security nor Rep. Omar's office immediately responded to requests for comment.
The current action follows a confirmation last month by border czar Tom Homan, who acknowledged an ongoing criminal probe into Omar but declined to provide specific details at the time. Omar, a Somali native, entered the United States in 1995 as a 12-year-old refugee.
The investigation occurs amid heightened political tension regarding Minnesota's Somali community, which President Trump has frequently targeted in his anti-immigration rhetoric. Last week, Trump called on Minnesotans to "fight back" against the state's Somali population and specifically demanded that Omar leave the country or be deported.
