Michigan had taken a 19-14 lead in the fourth quarter when Bryce Underwood completed a 49-yard touchdown pass to JJ Buchanan. This was their second scoring connection of the game, though Underwood's subsequent two-point conversion attempt fell incomplete. Coach Kyle Whittingham expressed disappointment that his team could not run out the clock after taking the lead.

Iowa had briefly taken its first lead of the fourth quarter on Brown's earlier touchdown pass to Vander Zee. Late in the game, with the ball at the Michigan 28, Iowa faced a fourth-and-six situation after left guard Leighton Jones was flagged for a false start. Coach Kirk Ferentz opted for a 51-yard field goal attempt by Caden Buhr, which went wide right with 2:33 remaining on the clock.
