Raiders QB Aidan O'Connell mourns father, cites faith in tribute

Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Aidan O'Connell was listed as inactive for the Sunday game against the New Orleans Saints following the announcement of his father's death earlier in the week. O'Connell, who has been with the Raiders since being selected in the fourth round of the 2023 draft, shared the news on social media before deactivating his accounts.

In a post published on Friday, O'Connell stated that he was sharing the passing of his father, Jim, with immense sadness. He described his father as a gift to him and to many others, noting that those who knew him could testify to the positive impact he had on countless lives. O'Connell wrote that his family is heartbroken by the loss and is relying on the Lord for comfort and peace. He expressed gratitude for the prayers, kindness, and support surrounding the family during this difficult time, asking for continued prayers as they grieve and honor their father's life.

The quarterback stated that saying goodbye has been incredibly difficult for all of them. He added that the family is holding tightly to the promises of Scripture and trusting that his father is at peace, finally and forever. O'Connell specified that he was echoing the Heidelberg Catechism in his time of sorrow.

The player cited a passage from that text to explain that his sole comfort lies in belonging body and soul to Jesus Christ in both life and death. He concluded the tribute by saying, "Rest in peace, Dad. We love you and will miss you more than words can say."

O'Connell has played in 21 games for the Raiders, accumulating 3,932 yards and 20 touchdown passes. He has occupied the QB3 spot to start the season after the team signed Kirk Cousins and drafted Fernando Mendoza No. 1 overall in the offseason.
