Philadelphia Eagles offensive tackle Lane Johnson announced his retirement from the National Football League on Tuesday, citing a need to focus on his mental health. The two-time Super Bowl champion, who is 36 years old, made the declaration in a personal statement following an unexpected absence from the Eagles' 24-20 loss to the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday.

Johnson revealed that he was inactive for the game against the Rams for personal reasons, a detail that preceded his formal retirement announcement. In his statement, he acknowledged that while he deeply wanted to play one final season, his personal and family priorities had shifted. He stated that it is critical for him to prioritize his mental health to ensure his heart and head are fully committed to the game, concluding that it is time to say goodbye to football.

The Eagles owner, Jeffery Lurie, responded to the news by labeling Johnson an "all-time Eagle" and one of the best players ever to play his position in NFL history. Lurie highlighted Johnson's 14-season tenure as a major contributor to team success, specifically noting the two Super Bowl championships won in 2017 and 2024. The owner also praised Johnson's charitable endeavors and his advocacy for mental health awareness, stating that his courage in sharing personal experiences has undoubtedly saved lives.

Statistical records underscore Johnson's impact on the franchise's performance. During his career, the Eagles posted a record of 98 wins, 42 losses, and one tie in games where he played. When he was out of the lineup, the team's record fell to 15 wins and 29 losses. Over his 14 seasons, Johnson earned six Pro Bowl selections.

Johnson entered this season limited to 10 games due to an injury but had participated in all three games prior to missing the matchup with the Rams. Originally selected with the No. 4 overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft out of Oklahoma, the Texas native established himself as one of the premier right tackles in the sport. In his farewell message, Johnson expressed gratitude to Philadelphia, describing it as the best city in the world and affirming that he will forever be an Eagle.
