The artificial intelligence capex cycle is facing a recalibration as interest rates move higher and calls for a slowdown in development gain traction. Against this backdrop, Nebius Group (NASDAQ:NBIS) has seen its recent momentum cool, with shares down more than 20% from its 52-week high of just under $300. The neocloud provider, which rents out AI compute power, remains one of the most active names in the sector despite the pullback.
Nebius has been a standout performer this year, with its stock value more than doubling to enter this week up over 170% since the start of 2026. The company’s most recent quarter showed revenue skyrocketing 454% to $582 million, driven by intense demand for its services. However, this rapid expansion comes with a significant cost structure; the company incurred a net loss of $190 million during the June quarter. While the top-line growth is impressive, the bottom-line pressure highlights the capital intensity of the business model.
Valuation Premium in a Shifting Rate Environment
The stock currently trades at a market cap of around $60 billion, a size that has grown significantly from its earlier days. At this level, Nebius commands a forward price-to-earnings multiple of approximately 45, a substantial premium compared to the S&P 500 average of 20. This valuation implies that investors are pricing in sustained, high-growth trajectories that may be difficult to maintain over a long time frame. The discount rate is no longer as forgiving as it was during the initial AI rally, and the Fed’s decision to raise interest rates last week adds another layer of complexity to the cost of capital for such ventures.
The broader cycle suggests that while AI spending remains feverish, the margin for error is narrowing. If Nebius cannot sustain its current growth rate, the high forward P/E multiple could prove difficult to defend. The read-through for the sector is that companies may have more incentive to cut back on spending if the macro environment tightens, potentially reducing demand for compute resources. On balance, the combination of a high valuation and a rising rate environment creates a risk profile that warrants caution. The stock’s recent decline reflects this adjustment, and further downside is possible if growth expectations are not met in the coming weeks and months.
