Los Angeles Rams coach Sean McVay confirmed that veteran defensive tackle Aaron Donald will not play against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday because of back soreness. The decision leaves the Rams without their two highest-profile offseason additions, as edge rusher Myles Garrett remains on injured reserve after an injury sustained during the Week 1 game in Australia. Donald, who returned from retirement in late August, missed the season opener because he had not progressed sufficiently in his ramp-up process. He is now dealing with what the team described as back issues. McVay stated that Donald felt some soreness after last week's loss to the Denver Broncos. McVay explained that the coaching staff feels a duty to shield Donald from his own stubbornness, even if the player wants to take the field. The head coach noted that Donald is exceptionally tough but is not feeling well enough to play. McVay added that asking Donald to sit out would be irresponsible, especially after consulting with team doctor Reggie Scott. He acknowledged that Donald would likely play and be productive if asked, but emphasized that part of their role is to protect such resilient athletes from making choices that could harm them. McVay added that Donald is working hard to feel better and that the team is hopeful and optimistic that good days are ahead. On the offensive side, wide receiver Puka Nacua is set to return Sunday after missing the past two games with a hip injury. McVay said Nacua looked sharp during practice this week, particularly in the more physically demanding portions of the session. Nacua recorded five receptions for 74 yards in Week 1. The Rams, who were pre-season Super Bowl odds-on favorites, enter Week 4 with a 1-2 record.
