Novavax Inc. shares have outperformed the S&P 500 index by 17.7% over the past six months, climbing to $10.87 per share for a 25.4% increase. However, StockStory analysts advise investors to avoid the stock due to deteriorating fundamentals that contradict the recent price momentum.

The research firm cites three primary concerns regarding the biotechnology company's financial health. First, Novavax has failed to generate consistent demand over the last five years, with sales declining at an annual rate of 18.9%. StockStory describes this trend as a sign of poor business quality, noting that while any business can post a strong quarter, enduring companies typically sustain growth over longer periods.

Second, the company's profitability has eroded significantly. Novavax's adjusted operating margin decreased by 26.9 percentage points over the last two years. For the trailing 12 months, this metric stood at negative 56.6%. The firm attributes this decline to rising costs that the company has been unable to pass on to customers. Adjusted operating margin measures the portion of revenue remaining after accounting for core expenses such as cost of goods sold, advertising, and wages, while excluding non-recurring items, interest, and taxes.

Third, Novavax's heavy reinvestment requirements have drained its cash reserves over the past five years. The company's free cash flow margin averaged negative 42%, meaning it burned $42 in cash for every $100 in revenue. StockStory emphasizes that cash flow is critical for paying bills and returning capital to investors, a capability currently limited for Novavax.

Despite these fundamental challenges, the stock currently trades at $10.87 per share. The firm notes that while the market typically values such companies based on anticipated profits for the next 12 months, there are not enough published estimates to derive a reliable valuation number for Novavax.

StockStory recommends investors look elsewhere for opportunities, specifically pointing toward semiconductor "picks and shovels" plays.
