Avery Klemmer of Thrive Capital has confirmed the firm secured a stake in Isomorphic Labs, a secretive startup spun out of Alphabet's artificial intelligence research laboratory. The investment marks a significant shift for the company, which had previously kept outside investors at bay and was not actively raising capital. Klemmer described the effort as a challenge, noting that many in the industry had dismissed the startup as uninvestable due to its Google origins.

Thrive Capital's team traveled to London in late 2024 to negotiate with Isomorphic. According to Klemmer, the firm pursued the opportunity over an 18-month period, viewing the company's technological foundation as a critical asset. Isomorphic is built around AlphaFold, a protein modeling tool that Klemmer noted has been recognized with a Nobel Prize in chemistry. While the technology originated in research, Isomorphic aims to deploy it as an engine for developing new medicines.

Klemmer characterized the potential of this AI-driven drugmaking approach as an "intensely exciting prize." She argued that success would provide tangible evidence that artificial intelligence offers more than hype, while also delivering substantial economic value. The company remains focused on translating its modeling capabilities into practical pharmaceutical applications, a transition that continues to draw scrutiny from investors and scientists alike.
